El Salvador
In the early 1980s, El Salvador was in extreme disarray. There was a civil war going on at the time that lasted until 1992, and it was very gruesome. Between the coup on October 15, 1979 and December of 1983, there were 49,162 civilian assassinations and 3,896 disappearances. Thus, these four churchwomen were not the only victims of the political terrain in El Salvador at the time.
